The University of Southern Queensland approved a $15 million upgrade to the Agricultural Science and Engineering Precinct on its Toowoomba Campus. The upgrades include new microbiology, quarantine and biosecurity laboratories as well as controlled growing environments.

Important landscape considerations for this project included the retention of numerous mature trees throughout the site, reuse of existing site materials such as topsoil and mulch and control of stormwater overland flow adjacent to refurbished buildings.

The landscape character is native and this helps to ensure a drought and frost tolerant landscape with the aim to reduce the required maintenance.

Seating areas, entry nodes and new signage as well as additional planting areas adjoining and adjacent to buildings were all part of the proposed landscape to the new laboratories as well as refurbishment of existing carparks and streetscape frontage. Stormwater swales were vegetated with native grasses and lined with river rock and carparks shaded with medium canopy shade trees.

Construction was undertaken by builders Wiley and Citicene were engaged to provide landscape architectural services including concept and detailed design for construction.
